The National Reading Month, as spearheaded by the Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) pursuant to Republic Act No. 10556, is an annual nationwide celebration every November that promotes the love for reading and its importance to the lifelong process of learning among Filipino learners.

This year’s theme is Pagbasa: Susi sa Magandang Kinabukasan (Reading: Key to A Beautiful Future). That reading has a powerful effect on our capacity to learn, develop and grow isn’t a new idea. It also give us joy. Aside from the sheer joy of exercising the imagination, research shows reading for pleasure improves literacy, social skills, health and learning outcomes.

Reading books is important. You can acquire knowledge, increase memory and imagination, are able to do more and better critical thinking, and it improves language and communication skills, to name some. Reading books is extremely important. Especially for children and young adults, because it makes them stronger to face the challenges of the future. It gives people access to culture and heritage and empowers them to become active citizens, who can contribute to economic and social development.

If someone asked you to name one trait that truly sets successful people apart, what would pop into your head?

Talent? Resources? A great network base? Innovative ideas? All of these things surely make a difference, but the single constant that permeates the top one percent of income earners is that they read. A lot.
